Electric Owl Studios

Summarize the project's program, features, and achievements: The Electric Owl Studios Campus was designed carefully to sustain the evolving demands of the commercial industry. The campus includes everything from stages and support spaces to production offices and workshops. Electric Owl Studios aims to become a new hub for content production in the Atlanta area, bringing in more film production to the expanding creative market in Atlanta. This project is also the world first purpose-built LEED Gold Certified film and TV studio. The development of Electric Owl studio was carefully crafted with reducing the environmental impact in mind.

What obstacles were overcome related to the schedule, budget, program, specification, site, etc. on this project? Due to the buildings being Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings, the tilt up brace design needed to be carefully considered to not interfere with the columns and framing of the PEMB that would be erected. The bracing of the tilt panels was customized to allow space for the columns of the PEMB that were tied to the tilt panels after the erection of all the panels.

Please communicate any engineering complexities or unique features of the panel design for this project. ? This project was unlike typical tilt-up buildings that utilize structural steel. The sound stage buildings were Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings which required the premade pieces to be bolted together on-site, then tied to the tilt panels. The tilt-panels for this construction were not used to support the roof deck and instead served as a shell for the building. This allowed for the interior sound stage walls to be easily retractable to allow the sound stages to be opened up internally if a larger stage was needed. All panels for Electric Owl Studios were erected by Full Tilt Crane Services where the first Liebherr LF 1400 SX (400 ton) crane was used for the first time in the entire United States.

What is the potential for this project's impact on the community and/or environment? Electric Owl Studios is the world's first purpose-built LEED Gold Certifies film and TV studio. The studio aims to minimize its environmental impact. Measures taken to make this, "the greenest studio on earth" include reducing its carbon footprint and generating clean energy by using LED lighting throughout, EV charging stations, solar panels, and carbon-negative concrete. The large environmental focus of this studio will reduce the overall impact of the production process from construction to day-to-day operations. The Pre-Engineered Metal buildings used during the tilt up construction used a considerably less amount of steel than traditional steel decking, further helping to reduce the environmental impact with building materials. In the community, Electric Owl Studios will be the newest facility to help Atlanta continue its steady expansion in content production. This state-of-the-art facility will help attract more film production to the area and have a positive impact to the Indian Creek neighborhood by brining in more skilled jobs and investment to the area.
