Ken's Food

Summarize the project's program, features, and achievements: This new 341,000 SF ASRS distribution facility for Ken’s Foods is located in McDonough, GA. This project is one of the newest additions to the Ken’s Foods network of distribution facilities that focuses on automated receiving/storage/shipping and will triple their manufacturing and distribution capabilities at their McDonough campus. Martin Concrete’s scope of work on this project included 8,100 SF SOG, continuous dock pits, 254,581 SF of concrete paving and tilt panel construction for designated areas of the building. Sika microfibers were incorporated throughout all the concrete paving at 1.5 lbs. per cubic yard to reduce plastic shrinkage of the newly laid concrete. Panel construction for this project included 44 tilt wall panels and a total gross wall surface area of 42,947 SF. The finished building features space for a trucker lounge and office area alongside the manufacturing and distribution side of the facility.

What obstacles were overcome related to the schedule, budget, program, specification, site, etc. on this project? Concrete allocations and material escalations extended the schedule of this project dramatically as well as increased cost. Meeting the owners schedule while also trying to minimize the cost impacts of escalations presented many challenges that Martin Concrete as a team had to work through to be able to meet the customers needs. Martin Concrete's scope work included the tilt wall construction of the building, interior foundations, stem walls, continuous dock pits and SOG. Due to the variety of concrete work being done, detail scheduling was required to communicate between subcontractors to ensure foundations and tilt walls were all completed in a timely manner to allow every team of subcontractors to remain on schedule.

Please communicate any engineering complexities or unique features of the panel design for this project. ? All panels for this building were erected by Full Tilt Crane Services. The Tilt panels formed the building area that contained interior slabs for Cold Storage and office space.

What is the potential for this project's impact on the community and/or environment? This expansion to the Ken's Food network of facilities will add 70 jobs, which will result in an overall growth of 500 staff members in the McDonough, GA area. The new positions include food processing, manufacturing and distribution, along with careers in management and supervision. This new facility will bring more investment to the area and will also allow Ken's Food to consolidate operations into one building which in turn will remove 40 trucks per day from the busy Georgia Highway 155 corridor.
