It was the intent of this design team to provide Quality Bicycle Products (QBP) with a fun, healthy, energy-efficient working environment and to provide them with a facility that will reinforce their leadership role in doing business in an environmentally responsible manner. The original intent was to obtain a LEED Gold Certification upon completion of the project. The owner, design team and contractor were able to exceed the original expectation and have submitted for a LEED Platinum Certification, which is the highest possible LEED Certification. The use of tilt-up concrete was a major factor in accomplishing energy efficient, sustainable construction.
The use of tilt-up concrete eliminated the need for other additional finish materials which are typically required for other types of construction. Tilt-up concrete wall construction is ideal for improving thermal efficiency because it eliminates air movement through a building's wall. This project utilized insulated wall panels. Concrete also provides thermal mass. The tilt-up construction qualified as a regional material and also has a high recycled material content. Material waste is also greatly reduced with tilt-up construction.
Large windows in the office areas provided natural light. The warehouse / distribution portion of the building also had an abundance of natural light by utilizing transom windows and skylights.

Segmented panels across the front of the office area created a large curved wall. A contemporary / modern feel was achieved by the random window and jamb widths, which were also staggered between the main level and second level. The office area has a large open floor plan.
The reveals in the warehouse / distribution walls are at random angles and spacing, inspired by the spokes on a bicycle wheel.

Although the wall panels along the front of the building create a large curved wall, and are irregular due to the somewhat random window and jamb widths and spacing... the panels are still designed to resist seismic forces.
The building design, orientation, method of construction and MEP controls make this a remarkable distribution facility of the future. The building utilizes ground source heat, solar panels, specialty controls, natural lighting, reflective roof and paving surfaces, waterless urinals, etc.
