The goal of the Mill Pond Village project in Cary, N.C., the only winner in the Retail category for the 2002 Awards, was construction of a multi-use facility providing employment, dining, laundry, banking, grocery shopping, exercise facilities and postal services, to coincide with the corporate office for Lowe's Food Store.
The biggest challenge for builder Citadel Contractors was convincing the owner to select site-cast Tilt-Up.
The developer, an owner of other Tilt-Up structures, felt Tilt-Up was the best method for this facility which was designed as a steel stud/brick veneer project with EIFS detail. The challenges continued with the specification of Tilt-Up for the stairwell and elevator shear walls.
Architectural treatment of the Tilt-Up panels varied and included inlaid brick, reveals, EIFS cornices and Dryvit finish. There are two prominent entrances at the fountain courtyard which feature cast-in brick on both faces, projecting columns and bands.
The end result in selecting site-cast Tilt-Up concrete was savings in excess of $1,000,000 and a two-month schedule advantage for construction of the intricate 254,000-square-foot facility.
