Honorable Mention

Storm Resistant Housing

I began my design process by researching completed Tilt up projects. From what I saw it was a very diverse way of building, with many possibilities. I wanted to combine what I knew about existing TiltUp buildings with what I knew from the given site.

With regard to the site needs and conditions I wanted my design to a have a strong sense of stability in the unstable region. I knew from photos that I had seen that large concrete forms would withstand the flood and wind conditions in the area. This southern climate call for some outdoor space. Each unit has an open patio and deck area to accommodate that need.

Before seeing existing buildings I knew I wanted to have a strong vertical feeling to my design. I feel that exaggerating several vertical features emphasizes the TiltUp method. The large TiltUp pieces that form the corner only have 3 slim windows in them. This emphasizes the punch out look in tilt up walls. TiltUp is not typically used for residential housing. The misconception is that concrete is not a comfortable look for residential environments. I added several wooden elements that relate to the overall vertical look. These element help to bring a personal aspect to each unit while still using a strongly concrete base.
