SRI at Rockingham

Completed in less than 34 months from the time of the Governor of Virginia‘s announcement about this project, this two-story high-tech, cost-effective bio-research facility is the first of its kind in western Virginia. This design-build project created a home for SRI Shenandoah Valley, the anchor facility at the recently developed Rockingham County Research and Technology Park. SRI has established the Center for Advanced Drug Research (CADRE), which will advance the productivity of the pharmaceutical industry, help our nation respond to bio-threats, and develop life-saving treatments for neglected and orphan diseases.

The facility is a combination of office space, meeting rooms, and research space, which includes several BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories and an insectary. Tilt-Up concrete panels are complemented by a combination of silver composite metal panels and pewter ribbed metal panels, which help create the building‘s dynamic recesses and form. SRI embraces the newest concept in laboratory design, which inspires creative thinking by allowing the surrounding vistas to become part of the research environment through large window openings. The exterior envelope was rapidly constructed to allow more time for the complex components of the laboratory construction.

The contractor‘s selection of steel and concrete met the owner‘s criteria of anti-vibration, and the low cost envelope of the building allowed for more attention to the lab space, all while maintaining budget. This project signals the beginning of a new business sector for the Shenandoah Valley.

Embraced by the community as a company with endless possibilities, SRI offers the four local colleges and universities opportunities for collaboration and employment for their graduates.
