Case Swayne

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Special Projects Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

A dramatic corner entrance highlights another 1995 TCA award winner, the new Case Swayne Company building in Corona, California. In this project Tilt-up was used to accomplish two important but distinct purposes - to create an exciting, contemporary look, and at the same time to accommodate the special building requirements of food processing businesses, of which Case Swayne is a distinguished member.

The main entrance uses radiused panels to create a bold, clean, and uncluttered focal point. The curved panel surface was repeated in window treatments by using laser cut foam forms to obtain a smooth and uniform appearance. In addition to the exterior walls, Till-Up interior walls were used to separate climate-controlled food storage areas r rom the holler and more humid processing areas. Interior walls were lifted from the exterior to avoid overstressing the slab and causing cracks (another sanitation concern).

Tilt-up allowed Prizio and Prizio, the general contractors, to successfully combine Case Swayne's desire for a stylish building with the strict health requirements that had to be met.

The building contains 115,983 square feet, at an approximate cost of $31.00 per square foot. Work was completed December 1, 1993.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
