A notably dramatic entrance and unique architectural finishes highlight the new JLM Industries, Inc., corporate headquarters at the Hidden River Corporate Park in Tampa, Florida.

JLM, one of the nation's largest chemical brokerage firms, moved its headquarters to Tampa from Stamford, Connecticut.

The R.R. Simmons Construction Co. of Tampa was hired as general contractor. Tilt-Up work was done by Florida Masonry Construction, also of Tampa. RRS Design/Build Services, a division of R.R. Simmons, were architects and engineers for the project were King Engineering Associates of Tampa.

RRS Design/ Build's team completed full schematic design, a detailed project budget, and a computer generated time-line within a six-week period.

The owner insisted on a tight construction schedule. Utilization of computerized scheduling systems allowed the work to proceed quickly.

The facility is a 25,320 square foot two-story steel frame structure with concrete Tilt-Up panels that serve as load-bearing exterior skin.

Panels average 7 inches thick and 20 feet wide x 28 feet high. Both building load-bearing panels with pilasters are integrated with exterior panels. The notable entrance to the building is a neoclassical domed canopy opening into a two-story lobby.

Painted, sand textured concrete panels were precast at the job site. They include reveals and recessed painted shapes for architectural accent. In addition, punched openings were used for visual impact. Spandrel high performance glass with painted mullions completes the sleek exterior of this design impressive building. The building includes a two-story atrium with an open stairwell. Ornamental railings lead to the second floor.

The building Is extensively landscaped and the site is a wooded part of the Hidden River Corporate Park.

JLM's new corporate headquarters was completed June 30, 1993 at a cost of approximately $1.4 million.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
