Bass Pro Outdoor World

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Retail Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

Bass Pro Outdoor World created a unique $12 million shopping experience to showcase its wide array of fishing, hunting and camping gear. Nearly 140,000 square feet of retail space were necessary to hold product, wildlife displays, and retail goods - even a 30,000-gallon aquarium.

The designers wanted the look and feel of an actual hunting lodge, yet made entirely of concrete. Through trial and error, Tilt-Con was able to create a special formliner on-site to form panels with a "beam and chink" look, coupled with a pre-existing formliner to mold the horizontal slatted "siding." The final outcome is an all-concrete structure that combines the looks of wood slats with those of a square-cut log cabin.

To further enhance the aesthetic appeal, special molds were used to create the poured-concrete tree trunks that surround the exterior of the store and specially designed stamps were used to imprint the interior stained slab with various animal "tracks."

The tallest panel on this structure is almost 33 feet high and the heaviest weighs more than 91,000 lbs. Meadow-Burke accessories were utilized.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
