When California State University San Marcos athletics gained NCAA Division II status, a facility with the stately permanence of an aspiring athletic program was desired. The university initiated a Field House expansion project to complement existing buildings on the CSUSM campus while featuring design elements that evoke motion, action, excitement and power. A combination of formliner types and selective sandblasting helped to articulate the design vision. Tilt-up concrete construction kept the project within its tight budget and schedule constraints. The 26,563-square-foot facility was built in 11 months, with exceptional finish construction. Creating this highly visible facility helps foster pride and promotes a greater sense of community on campus for current students while providing alumni with increased opportunities to reconnect with their alma mater. Equally important, it serves as a center of entertainment, athletics and educational programming to the entire region.

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
