The Living Planet Aquarium

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Commercial Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

The Living Planet Aquarium houses a variety of aquatic and terrestrial animals, ranging from marine and freshwater fish to penguins, amphibians, and birds. The building is divided into various habitats and tanks and themed to make the interior space more realistic. The use of tilt-up construction allowed for a large outer shell to be constructed efficiently, saving money for the exhibit spaces within.

Each panel was constructed with a unique band of relief form liners cut to varying curves that run seamlessly from panel to panel. The effect looks something like a ribbon winding around the structure, with inner tessellations reminiscent of fish scales. The exterior of the panels was also painted with light-and-dark blues to maximize the relief and hint at the ocean.

The Living Planet Aquarium goes to extensive measures to run sustainably. Conservation efforts include a water reuse system, high-efficiency windows, and LED lighting. Additionally, education is a major part of the aquarium's mandate. There are 3 large classrooms where children visiting on field trips can meet with marine biologists. The aquarium's outreach programs reach over 50,000 Utah students yearly.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
