TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Office Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

This project utilizes four-story panels with several innovative design details. The punched window openings are connected horizontally through a panel recess at the tilt-up legs. By using dark paint on the concrete between window openings and a high contrasting white field color, the windows appear to be connected across each panel. The fourth floor further breaks down the panels by using a deep recess at the panel leg that allows the glass to pass in front and provides a continuous ribbon of glass across the entire elevation.

The additional detail of 18-in. sunshades and a 4-ft. eyebrow provides the building face depth and shadow to reinforce the horizontal expression. Although 30-ft.-wide panels were possible for the required panel height, 20-ft.-wide panels were utilized to provide the proper scale of the window openings and stepped pattern design.

This project achieved LEED Platinum. The project location in Denver is ideal for the high thermal mass walls and the project easily exceeded the minimum energy code requirements using rooftop unit HVAC system. Additional sustainable features include a photovoltaic array on the roof, electric car charging stations, reclaimed beetle kill wood pine wall panels at the lobby, and water-saving plumbing fixtures.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
