Building with Tilt-Up | Project Profiles

Harley-Davidson of North Texas

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Retail Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

A multitude of specialty surfaces and finishes were used throughout the Harley-Davidson of North Texas dealership in order to communicate the brand's identity as well as provide functionality.

The exterior is clad with brick on the front and side facades to match the look of the original Harley-Davidson manufacturing plant in Milwaukee, Wis. Brickwork also sets the tone in the building's interior, being used extensively in the tower atrium and in the main showroom. Brick even accents the parts department and circulation areas within the building. Various ceramic flooring solutions were utilized throughout the building to provide surfaces that were durable enough for motorcycle traffic. In addition, various specialty items - including 26 cycle lifts - were installed in the service area.

Taken together, these details of the project translated into a demanding construction schedule, which meant that when the construction timeframe coincided with a season of extreme weather, the project's timeline was threatened. Fortunately, tilt-up construction offered a solution for keeping the project on schedule. The use of tilt-up panels allowed the project team to construct the building shell quickly. They were then able to begin interior work earlier in the schedule, which had the added benefit of increasing opportunities for overlapping the work of different disciplines.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
