Casas Bahia - Aruja

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Warehouse/Distribution Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

Casas Bahia is one of the major retailers of furniture and home appliances in Brazil. Designers of their distribution center were asked to be sensitive to three key aspects of the company's approach to their market: prime location, large storage capacity and environmental awareness.

To address the first consideration, the building was located in the outskirts of Brazil's main market, Sao Paulo. Tilt-up construction helped designers meet the other two criteria. Building the structure using the tilt-up system and metallic roofing enabled the creation of large free spans from 60 to 85 feet (20 to 26 meters) between columns, optimized to the client's rack layout and equipment circulation. The system's ability to create architectural patterns on the facade also helped replicate the style of other recent Casas Bahia projects, reinforcing the company's brand identity. Use of tilt-up panels allowed for high efficiency in the building's climate control; large openings were created in the finger docks area, improving indoor air quality and exchange rate and helping to provide thermal comfort for employees.

Tilt-up construction also afforded a significant reduction in construction time and costs, considering the large area of the warehouse.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
