Armed Forces Reserve Center

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Special Projects Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

The Armed Forces Reserve Center included the design and construction of a new 1,163-member Army National Guard and Army Reserve training center, an organizational maintenance shop, exterior loading ramp, flammable storage building, controlled waste handling facility, and heated and unheated storage facilities. Special requirements of the project included sturdy construction in a tornado-prone area that can be used as a storm responder headquarters and community shelter.

Tilt-up construction provided the required degree of sturdiness, with the use of insulated sandwich panels with form liners. Tilt-up panels also fit the diverse requirements of the co-located groups (office space, storage space, band room, training and dining). To make the architecture look more traditional, the field crew stained the tilt-up to provide a stone look. The facility is LEED Gold certified.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
