Building with Tilt-Up | Project Profiles

Mia Shoes

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Warehouse/Distribution Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

Mia Shoes did not want a traditional warehouse, but rather an attention grabbing facility for their warehousing operations. The 87,418-square-foot Mia Shoes facility is laden with style and flair.

Tilt-Up was selected for this project because of its ability to provide both a functional workplace and architectural versatility. Proving that the owner’s wishes were met, judges noted that this facility was anything but a boxy warehouse and the architectural treatments that were utilized greatly enhanced the visual appeal of the building.

In order to ensure that nothing detracted from the aesthetics of the building, special attachments were designed that would not disturb the exterior features of the facility. Panels were arranged in an eye-catching stair-step pattern and balconies extend from the second floor offices.

Cast-in-place concrete eyebrows and canopies were cast after the panels were erected and are supported by the panels. Many of the outside faces of the panels are 75 percent covered with reveals and recesses. Further, the visual interest is enhanced by the corner feature panel that features a 15-foot horizontal cantilever, reveals and eyebrows on each side.

The building consists of load bearing panels that support the precast concrete second floor and roof framing system. Precast double tees and beams are supported on continuous concrete haunches cast monolithically with the panels.

With many panels weighing in excess of 100,000-pounds, the contractor had to develop a new method for hanging the panels, and special insets and sleeves were created to hold the panels in place.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
