Kilgore Building

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Office Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

In 2006, the original 7,700-square-foot Kilgore Office building was constructed of exposed Tilt-Up concrete. It had a very simple, conservative design and was built as the best long-term value for an emerging company. After several years of strong growth and subsequent mergers, Kilgore Companies expanded from simple asphalt paving to earthwork, concrete production, and aggregate supply.

The new 26,770-square-foot addition had to not only blend with the existing building, it also had to express the complexity and capability of what the company had become. Concrete was also an appropriate material to feature as Kilgore had expanded into the concrete business. Exposed Tilt-Up allowed Kilgore to feature their product, provide an exterior life-time finish, and facilitated the four-and-a-half month construction schedule.

The resulting design pushes the architectural expression of Tilt-Up. Varying heights, layers, and configurations of the individual Tilt-Up panels create unique forms and spaces. The exposed concrete walls are also featured on the inside of the building in different planes that define the building envelope. The panels are not painted or hidden in any way the raw nature and strength of the concrete is the finished surface. Tilt-Up is highlighted as both the structure and the finished surface.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
