Building with Tilt-Up | Project Profiles

Rolls-Royce Crosspointe Rotatives Facility

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Manufacturing/Industrial Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

The use of Tilt-Up panels for the walls of main production building at Rolls-Royce Crosspointe Rotatives evolved from three early design challenges.

First, fire-rated insulated metal panels were required for the exterior finish for the building. Second, it was an aggressive construction schedule which allowed only 14 months for building completion including site preparation, building design and permitting. Third, the design criteria required flexibility for future change within and possible expansion to the north. Also, durability of interior surfaces was required for production material flow.

The design team used Tilt-Up panels for the interior wythe and standard insulated metal panels for the exterior, providing a huge cost benefit for the fire rating requirement. Additionally, the structural benefit of Tilt-Up contributed to support of the exterior metal panels. Using Tilt-Up allowed the building to be closed early so interior work could begin before the insulated metal panels were fabricated, delivered and erected. It also solved the durability issues for the full height of the interior walls, which initially would have required the addition of a secondary wainscot to 8 feet.

The use of Tilt-Up in areas identified as future expansion or potential modification, allowed for removable panels and future wall openings in the design of the walls.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
