Building with Tilt-Up | Project Profiles

Irving Bible Church

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Spiritual Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

Irving Bible Church planned to expand their 60,000-square-foot building to better serve its growing congregation and desire for community outreach. An additional 110,000 square feet of space was added utilizing Tilt-Up concrete.

The site played a major role in the project due to its soils, contour and constructed size. Soil conditions required suspending floor slabs 3 feet above a crawl space. Tile-Up was used for perimeter load bearing of these slabs. The contour of the site was taken advantage of by designing the stepped floor of the sanctuary to follow the contours, creating a lower level for backstage and recording studios. Stack panel forming was used due to the space restrictions.

A Tilt-Up sanctuary space was developed within a larger Tilt-Up wall space requiring creative sequencing of construction. The sanctuary "box" is skewed within the orthogonal form of the rest of the expansion, creating unique spaces as the building steps down to match both the topography of the site and stepped floor of the sanctuary itself.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
