Miami Carol City Senior High School

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Educational Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

Miami Carol City Senior High School was completed in 22 months, the fastest completion time for any high school of its size in Miami-Dade County.

Designed to house 2,800 students, the school consists of nine buildings. In addition, the auditorium, cafeteria and gym are designated hurricane shelters and were constructed to higher wind resistant standards.

Tilt-Up wall panels with concrete joists with structural decks were the basis of the structural shell. Steel joists were used for the roof areas. Most of the site was to be concentrated with the new buildings with limited area that could be used for casting the Tilt-Up panels. The schedule was developed in a sequential manner so that the panels for any given building would be cast on an adjacent building's slab on grade, lifted, and walked to its final position.

Most of the Tilt-Up panels incorporated two different formliner patterns as well as different size and depth reveals and recesses that help accentuate the window features that changed from building to building, creating an almost art deco theme to the project.

The two-story building stairways were also constructed of Tilt-Up panels with large glass areas to let in the natural light, all with their own unique dimensioning and reveal patterns.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
