Building with Tilt-Up | Project Profiles

Security Central

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Office Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

The 15,134-square-foot Security Central office building is an example of a project that was well thought out and executed, especially in its use of thin brick. The use of Tilt-Up construction provided a quicker schedule and was more cost-effective than competing methods.

Judges commented on the Tilt-Up technology employed and attention to detail that allowed the brick in the panels to be utilized so effectively. This project has elevated the use of Tilt-Up locally on small and office projects.

Site conditions were particularly challenging for this project. With a usable floor slab of less than 5,500-square-feet, the team decided to construct an 11,000-square-foot casting bed in the parking lot that was eventually covered by asphalt paving. The 50,000-square-foot site had a slope, so the casting bed sloped in two directions. This required focused attention to the detailed panel articulation.

The owner’s desire for great exposure resulted in construction of an extremely tall two-story office building boasting panels that, at 41-feet, were almost tall enough to accommodate a third floor. Further, conventional brick columns and a sheet metal flashing were used to create a robust entry.

An effective use of both thin brick and conventional brick, the two systems match and most people think the entire building is traditional brick. Even more remarkable, the project was completed in six months through a harsh Colorado winter.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
