CHW Woodland Healthcare Medical Office Building

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Office Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

The owners of CHW Woodland Healthcare wanted to build a state-of-the-art medical facility, but they soon realized that the traditional steel-frame design they had in mind would be prohibitively expensive. Although neither the owner nor the architect was familiar with Tilt-Up construction, Panattoni Construction’s extensive experience with this construction method convinced them that they could achieve the same aesthetic features with Tilt-Up at a savings of $10 to $15 per square foot. A tilt-up shear-wall design reduced the amount of structural elements needed and therefore aided in slashing the project budget.

To help the structure transcend the boxy Tilt-Up stereotype, Panattoni suggested incorporation of plenty of stone to accent the original design of the natural timber. The use of the textured elastomeric exterior coating on the tilt-up panels helps them blend with the natural stone and wood elements. Punched window openings and embedded sun canopies help filter in natural light in addition to the two-story, 300-foot long gallery reception area, which is flooded with light thanks to continuous clerestory windows. Multiple panel heights and a recessed front entry add architectural interest.

The design also includes spaces for public art displays, making the building a touchstone for the community and achieving Woodland Healthcare’s goal of creating a “healing environment” for their patients and the community.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
