Article tools: Coming soon!

Westland, an importer of porcelain figurines and music boxes, required a facility that would reflect the quality and uniqueness of their products. It had to be constructed quickly, be durable and cost-competitive with other commercial and industrial buildings nearby.

The owner chose tilt-up concrete construction to meet these requirements. The building is two-story, 64,574 square feet, including 13,000 square feet of office. It sits on approximately three acres of land, and has six dock-high doors, four drive-in doors, and 105 parking spaces.

Inlaid slate in the walkway and lobby with barrel-vaulted skylight give a distinguished and unique look to the building. Balch Enterprises, Inc., Hayward, Calif., performed the general and tilt-up contracting functions, while Ron Reese, Hayward, was the architect and engineer.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
