Wolfson Children's Hospital and Nemours Children's Clinic, on opposite sides of Interstate 95 in Jacksonville, have built a pedestrian overpass connecting their facilities. The walkway is climate-controlled and allows medical staff, patients and families to pass between the clinic, where children visit specialists, and the hospital where they go for extended stays. The Haskell Company in Jacksonville design/built the project.

The 780-foot walkway consists of nine steel truss sections bearing on four cast-in-place and two tilt-up concrete piers. The 14-foot wide by 230-foot long section over the interstate is cable-stayed to the two impressive tilt-up piers, destined to become the "signature structure" for the city of Jacksonville.

The piers were cast on the site in six sections each, then lifted into place. They were connected vertically with grouted sleeve connectors, and horizontally with cast in place transverse beams. The Haskell Company provided all design and contracting functions on the project. Bliss & Nyitray, Miami, was the structural engineering firm.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
