Article tools: Coming soon!

This structure was designed in the Southern tradition for higher education facilities. A variety of textures and materials were utilized including thin brick, pseudo stone, and precast fascia elements attached to the tilt-up panels. The building was constructed by Brice Building Company of Birmingham, Alabama.

The tilt-up panels were typically 15ft wide x 36 ft tall. Extruded polystyrene was used to form a block-out where thin brick was installed after the panels were erected. Oak strips were used for the areas where a simulated granite look was required. These areas were formed to simulate 18 in x 60 in stones. The horizontal banding and sculpted fascia were constructed from precast concrete which was attached through blcokouts in the panels.

The panels were formed and erected over a period of 90 days. Work on the interior of the building could proceed simultaneously with the completion of the more ornate portions of the exterior.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
