Building with Tilt-Up | Project Profiles

University of St. Augustine Academic Building

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Educational Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

The University of St. Augustine is dedicated to graduating clinical practitioners with a relevance to today's healthcare delivery and marketplace. Completed in approximately six months, the more than 100,000-square-foot project incorporated Tilt-Up into the design.

There were many obstacles in the construction of the building ranging from limited space to volatile land. The project was built next to a salt marsh, thereby causing the footings to periodically flood. In order to remedy this problem, a vibro-compaction system was used. The action of the vibrator, usually accompanied by water jetting, reduces the inter-granular forces between the soil particles, allowing them to move into a denser configuration. Due to the insufficient floor space for pouring the panels, the subcontractor was required to use multiple casting slabs as well as perform stack casting. The stairs also were cast in place.

Proving to be a solid example of today’s Tilt-up versatility, the subcontractor was able to create an aesthetically appealing higher education building and meet client expectations, while safely completing the project on time and on budget.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
