Building with Tilt-Up | Project Profiles

Optical Coatings Laboratory - Bldg 8

TCA Tilt-Up Project Profile - Manufacturing/Industrial Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

OCLI (Optical Coating Laboratory Inc.), the world's largest manufacturer of optical thin film coated components used to manage light, needed to expand their facilities as quickly as possible to keep up with the high demand for their products in the telecommunications industry.

The solution, a winner in the Manufacturing/Industrial category, is a 167,000-square-foot facility in Santa Rosa, Calif. RMW architecture & interiors and Panattoni Construction, Inc. completed the building in seven months. The integration of Class 1000 clean rooms required unique design considerations and stringent vibration criteria for the first and second floor slabs.

Tilt-Up allowed the design team to incorporate design elements that complement the neutral palette of the existing campus through graphic bands of paint, as well as silver and black glass to provide scale to the high bays. Additionally, the exterior stair tower walls mimic the curvature of a lens, breaking up the long elevations. About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
