Warehouse Expansion

2009 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Warehouse/Distribution Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

This warehouse expansion project, located in Santa Fe Springs, Calif., added approximately 386,000-square feet of additional shipping, distribution and warehousing capacity to an existing 300,000-square-foot warehouse facility built in 1984.

This new expansion serves two functions: Consolidates the company’s facilities under one roof, while allowing for future growth in both the warehouse and office spaces; and dramatically improves the work environment for employees by providing access to natural light and ventilation.

The owner selected the Tilt-Up concrete construction technique to deliver the massive 40-foot-high structure walls. Specifically, Tilt-Up was selected to control schedule and project costs. It was noted that Tilt-Up is a highly efficient method of construction that makes attractive buildings possible at costs that rival the most utilitarian industrial building.

Using Tilt-Up concrete, as compared to a standard steel frame, also allowed the design team to create an addition that did not require an HVAC system. The thermal mass inherent in concrete reduces the heating and cooling peaks and thus allowed the team to utilize more sustainable and aesthetically pleasing components such as natural light and ventilation – a new paradigm in the world of industrial warehouse design. Using innovations in the field of Tilt-Up, the architect chose this opportunity to create an addition to the campus that was not only an improvement in the work environment but also an improvement in aesthetics as a whole.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
