St. Patrick's Church Parish Center

The challenge for the construction team was to build a durable, low maintenance community center, at low cost, while matching or complementing a 100-year old limestone church building on the grounds.

The general and Tilt-Up contractor, Bruns General Contracting, worked with The Architecture Partnership to arrive at a system of Tilt-Up panels patterned with form liners to match the limestone of the old church.

Stamped metal panels were used to roof the entry canopy to match the clay terra cotta mission barrel roof of the old church.

Because the building's floor had many pipe and mechanical penetrations, casting beds were required, with the panels walked into place by crane. Form liners were reused an average of four times, with meticulous planning to match the stone patterns across the panels. Corners were mitered with smooth joints.

The gymnasium floor, which called for a direct-applied hardwood glue-down surface, required a special dissipating bond breaker.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
