Kellems & Coe Tool Corporation

1999 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Manufacturing/Industrial Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

Having outgrown their facility, Kellems & Coe decided to build an attractive new facility with a 42,000-square-foot ground floor and a 10,000-square-foot mezzanine.

Instead of using reveals for design on the Tilt-Up wall, Kovert Hawkins Architects, chose to use the Tilt-Up wall as the architectural element, limiting reveals to four two-inch reveals closely spaced at the top of the panels. The result is a very architecturally interesting building, uncluttered by an overabundance of reveals.

The structure is pre-engineered steel with sidewall columns. The walls are all Tilt-Up with full perimeter parapet and internal roof drains. AML was the Tilt-Up contractor.

Three sides of the building are typical Tilt-Up panels with few openings. However, the front elevation is quite complicated, including curved and flat panels, some suspended between adjacent panels and steel columns. In addition, some of the panels project out from the building at an angle. All of the front panels, including the suspended panels, are load-bearing, supporting the second floor mezzanine and roof structures.

The general contractor on the project was KM Stemler. Jake Harmon provided engineering.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
