The CS Crable Sportswear Company has enjoyed a dramatic increase in sales volume of their products over the past five years. The company manufactures and distributes embroidered and silkscreened sportswear for colleges, the National Football League, and special events. To keep up with growth the company decided to construct new office, manufacturing and warehouse space in Clermont County, Ohio.

Construction of the company's new 297,000 square foot facility began in July, 1992. When the project was done the following June, CS Crable had tripled its space.

The Miller-Valentine Group of Dayton, Ohio, was hired as both general and Tilt-Up contractors for the project. Miller-Valentine contracted the architectural engineering firm of Lockwood, Jones and Beals, Cincinnati, Ohio, and the architectural firm of PDT & Company of Dayton to complete the team for the CS Crable job.

The project included a two story 40,500 square foot office building, a 99,000 square foot manufacturing area, a 139,000 square foot warehouse, and nearly 19,000 square feet of mezzanines that allow for future expansion of each section.
In addition, enough extra land was acquired to add another 200,000 square feet as needed.

A unique part of the Crable complex is that it also includes a baseball field comparable to the big leagues, a Little League baseball field, and a soccer field!

Steel-bar joists and Tilt-Up construction were well-suited for the size of this facility. The facade is divided into a series of continuous horizontal accent joints with ribbon windows, creating a low, horizontal design effect. A canopied, two-story vertical glass panel defines the striking entrance to the building.

The entire structure is insulated. The lower eight feet is sandwich wall, and the remainder is a "soft" system with faced batt insulation retained by a vinyl channel system.

The 11 3/4 inch thick panels are 32 feet high with a typical weight of 48,000 pounds. The resulting smooth interior walls facilitate east cleaning, which is necessary in the silk-screening business.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
