ARCH: Austin Resource Center for the Homeless

2009 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Special Projects Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

Homeless-service facilities tend to get a bad rap, which is why the City of Austin put architectural aesthetics and environmental friendliness at the top of its priority list when creating the Austin Research Center for the Homeless. The design of the 25,400-foot building — which features an exposed structural Tilt-Up frame with exterior voids and infill walls — promotes the open, informal atmosphere the city was after.

To accommodate a small building site, CMC developed a stack casting system specifically for this project, which had the added benefit of reducing the amount of formwork and finishing materials used, and also gave the exposed concrete a high-quality finish. A 45-percent fly-ash concrete mixture was used to reduce environmental impact, and the structure was designed so that 90 percent of the lighting in workspaces comes from natural sources — considerations that ultimately earned the center a LEED Silver rating.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
