East Cooper Medical Center MOB

2015 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Office Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

For this project, the design/build team was tasked with executing a design to fit within the existing medical campus, which contained a much larger six-story, 130-bed, red clay brick building. Tilt-up construction was chosen as the building technique to help meet the client's desired schedule. One of the most interesting parts of this project is the use of a unique 42-foot 9-inch inverted radius wall panel, complete with embedded custom thin-brick and colored concrete joints.

While sticking with the campus's material palette of red clay brick and stucco appearance, the team used an attention grabbing, inverted radius wall panel as the building's main focal point. This 42-foot 9-inch wide and 36-foot 3-inch tall tilt-up panel has a sweeping 108-foot 9-inch radius, and weighs over 93,000 pounds. Building and erecting this panel from its separate casting bed to its final location took coordination between the entire project team for success. All of the wall panels, including the radius panel, used embedded thin-brick specifically manufactured for this project, along with a combination of rustication reveals and 2" recessed areas to compliment the surrounding medical campus. While the clay brick elements of the project dominate the building's appearance though the embedded thin brick water table and the radius panel, there are also several other aluminum overhangs and canopies to create even more interest along the building's facades.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
