All panels had to be cast on a temporary casting bed then walked up a slight incline to be placed on foundations that were five feet below sub-grade. Combined with the panel height and weight, lifting the panels off the temporary casting bed was a challenge, even with a 300-ton crawler crane. The required rigging length did not allow the panel to be turned once it was picked off the bed due to clearance with the main bar and the crane boom. All panels had to be erected and braced from the inside face due to utilities and an adjacent bridge outside the property line. Erection sequence and temporary brace planning were critical in maintaining a safe work environment.

Panel-to-panel connections were welded daily to help brace the panels against high winds during hurricane season. The required mitered corners along with a 1.5-inch deep form liner (large staggered block pattern) on a 78-foot-tall panel also created a challenge.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
