Allied Health

2012 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Educational Division

The Allied Health facility houses training programs for nursing, medical assisting and dental assisting. The building consists of a 40,275-square foot two-story Tilt-Up construction with a seismically separated steel-framed two-story ellipse that houses two state-of-the-art lecture halls with raised tiered seating. The main part of building includes staff offices, classrooms, dental training suite, nursing labs with hospital beds, and various other training rooms.

Originally planned to be 40 percent larger, due to budget challenges the building was redesigned utilizing the Tilt-Up construction method for ease of construction and to reduce project time and costs while still maintaining the core mission. Exterior building skin includes painted concrete Tilt-Up panels, stucco over heavy-gauge metal stud framing, aluminum composite paneling, aluminum sun shade devices, storefront glazing, and curtain wall.

The project presented many constructability challenges. For example, the design incorporated many nonlinear elements. The east building elevation was curved and had a 778-foot radius. Some interior walls also had radiuses, and the two main lecture halls were housed in a two-story ellipse. These nonlinear assemblies created constructability challenges with such items as curved structural steel, and curved light-gauge metal track, and the integration of these curved assemblies with straight segmented materials such as glass. Accurate surveying, iterative communication with the design team and thorough coordination with subcontractors was key in building these elements correctly and precisely.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
