The CAC Academic building was designed to replicate the look of the adjacent mountain range. The finish on the panels needed to have a split-face look of the side of the mountain. Working with the Architect, sample panels were developed to achieve the desired look using an integral colored concrete mix and a rod finish to the outside face of the panels. Because of the rod finish on the outside, all panels had to be cast outside face-up and the reveals hung in place instead of the traditional method of gluing or fastening the reveals to the floor.

The floors of the building were integral colored with a special aggregate and a ground polish finish. Due to the fact that the owner wanted minimal impact to the existing native site and that the site had some protected wash areas that could not be disturbed, all the panels were cast on casting beds and walked into place from up to 200 feet away.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
