Redmond Medical Office Building

2011 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Institutional Division

The Redmond Medical Office Building is a three-story freestanding emergency department and medical office building.

With the extremely limited site area and the size of the panels, the layout of casting slabs and crane access were paramount in the success of the project. The panels on the casting slabs were facilitated with the extensive underslab infrastructure ongoing on the building slab. Once the underslab work was complete and the building pad was poured, the panels on the slab could be cast as well. There were more than 400 underslab plumbing and electrical locations that all had to be held down under the slab so the panels could be poured.

The structural nature of the panels as load bearing panels did not lend itself to coring any penetrations in the panels. As a result, all of the panel penetrations had to be coordinated prior to casting. There were dozens of panels and not a single one was misaligned. The design of the panels was such that they were a structural element of the steel support of the building.

Tilt-Up saved the owner money and allowed the building to be completed in a record 7.5 months, months earlier than originally scheduled, quickly bringing the much needed facility to the community.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
