LA Fitness East Boca Raton

2011 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Commercial Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

To fit a standard LA Fitness prototype on this compact site, the design was modified, allowing for parking below the main floor of the gym. The garage area was designed to allow the exterior Tilt-Up panels to bear on foundations, making the typical panel 50 feet tall. This also allows the panels to be load bearing, making the structure more cost efficient and speeding up construction time.

Pre-cast joists and soffit beams were selected for the main floor structure. Connections of the precast elements were simple and the cast-in-place floor locks the panels to the floor diaphragm. The building has 9 ¼-inch-thick panels to withstand the high wind pressures induced from hurricane force winds.

The main entry feature is a large glass entry in a curved front facade. The curved panel is cast at an 84-foot radius and the curved panels flank the main entrance glass. The top curve over the glass is framed off the backing Tilt-Up panel, thus completing the curved look. The back of the club includes a mini curved corner element consisting of a series of seven Tilt-Up columns supporting Tilt-Up curved spandrels cast on an 11-foot radius.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
