USF Basketball Facility (Pam & Les Muma Center)

2011 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Educational Division

The Pam and Les Muma Basketball Center at the University of South Florida (USF) is the focal point for the University's Division One sports complex. The symmetrical V-shaped facility is aligned to fit into the existing dome configuration.

The USF Facilities Department required the use of a "cavity wall" configuration. This was satisfied with the incorporation of insulation into the panels. Most panels are 15.25 inches in thickness. This added insulation allowed the gym space to be a painted concrete surface for durability and minimized maintenance. The entry tower feature which is more thanr 50 feet in height was perfect choice for Tilt-Up. Given the scale and height of the facility other materials than Tilt-Up would have been far more costly and time consuming.

Using the insulated panels saved at least four weeks when compared to an insulated masonry wall. Tilt-Up panels left exposed in the gym further eliminated the need for lesser finished materials. The ability to create large scale volumes for the gym spaces were a perfect fit. The added durability of Tilt-Up cannot be overstated for the wear and tear of a college training center.

The personalized basketball brand cast into the exterior of this project would have been far less effective if another material had been chosen.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
