Saft Lithium-Ion Battery Plant

2011 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Manufacturing/Industrial Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

Saft America incorporated multiple concrete Tilt-Up fire walls to reduce the building square foot areas of hazardous processes. Per code requirements, the building was segmented into 14 separate "fire areas," each able to collapse under a fire without affecting the surrounding buildings. Due to the volatile, toxic and explosive nature of the manufacturing process, the highest risk areas were separated from other areas of the building by multiple 4-hour fire walls. The building was designed to allow the continuation of the process and fireman access to any part of the building by using rated concrete Tilt-Up walls.

Tilt-Up was a perfect solution to all of the unique engineering and safety problems including; resistance to explosion pressures, 120 mph hurricane resistant, 4-hour fire resistance and contaminant resistance. Given a short schedule and the high demands, Tilt-Up proved to be the safest, cheapest and fastest method of addressing all of the challenges.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
