Tramontina West Airport

2010 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Municipal Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

The West Airport Distribution Building for Tramontina, U.S. is the most recent element of a multi-phase industrial master plan for their new corporate headquarters. This new 299,758-square-foot facility gestures toward the original facility through orientation and materiality.

A bowtie form was used for the building entrance and was sited directly on axis with the curtain wall entry of the office building, thereby establishing a clear relationship between them. A larger bowtie facade gestures toward the park's entrance, creating a focal point on the approach from West Airport Boulevard.

The abstract pattern of apertures and natural bush-hammered concrete finish on these prominent faces of the building are indexical to the overall campus identity. A setback with continuous glazing and sun-shading devices at the office component maximizes daylighting and views in the interior while reducing glare at task levels. Tilt-Up spandrel panels on steel supports create the continuous glass setback.

The design team found opportunity for design and innovation using the site, building materiality and composition through the use of Tilt-Up.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
