St. Louis Rams Corporate HQ and Training Facility

1997 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Special Projects Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

Facilities of this type have traditionally been constructed using pre-engineered frames and either metal, masonry, or combination of both, exterior skins. The indoor field had to have a clear span of 200 ft and a clear minimum height of 65 ft. Clayco Construction Company of St. Louis, Missouri toured existing facilities in several major cities and came to the conclusion that a tilt-up exterior could provide a more durable and economical facade.

The architectural concept incorporates reflective glass block, rustication bands, a multi-colored paint scheme, and varying panel thicknesses to create depth and vertical features. The project was 158,000 square feet and included locker room/training areas and general offices. The tallest continuous panels were 69 ft in height.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
