This 78,354-square-foot hotel project located in the Dominican Republic took a mere three months to complete. And, as one of the first Tilt-Up hotel projects, it validates the options available with today’s site-cast construction.

The initial design specified masonry construction but the client needed faster results and a safer structure in a hurricane, next to the Caribbean shore area. Building on their past experience using Tilt-Up, the contractor was able to adapt the design to use Tilt-Up panels in most areas.

One of the project challenges was that the top of the panels had the same slope as the roof. An additional challenge was how to allow the elevated floor and roof slabs to be continuous through the panels without using any beams, columns, corbels or other vertical support. And, in order to provide an aesthetically pleasing interior surface finish, the electrical and plumbing pipes had to be located inside the Tilt-Up walls.

This project certainly dispels any myths about Tilt-Up’s applicability for new market types.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
