Wilton Connor Packaging Global Headquarters

2009 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Warehouse/Distribution Division

Article tools: Coming soon!

For their corporate distribution headquarters building, packaging-supply manufacturer Wilton Connor wanted to create a one-of-a-kind structure by manipulating everyday materials, rather than spending a large sum of money on an ostentatious building. The result is a 334,000-square-foot facility that blends exposed Tilt-Up panels with steel and aluminum composite elements to create a dynamic space to welcome clients such as Wal-Mart and Target.

Large Tilt-Up fins flank the entrance of the building and dramatically intersect with a load-bearing curtain on the interior. Once inside, the panels morph into a dramatic water feature with fountain and reflecting pool in the lobby that serves as the central hub of the structure. Radiating off the lobby is 264,000 square feet of office, production and warehouse space, as well as a 70,000-square-foot display space where the company can showcase packaging in a mock retail environment.

The ability to create an innovative, cost-effective structure through the use of Tilt-Up delighted the client and helped earn the project a nomination for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Bottom Line Award.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
