Palm Beach Community College is one of the largest community colleges in Florida. Specifically, the PBCC Bio Science Technology Building is a 90,240-square-foot project featuring two structures connected by a multi-media lecture hall and courtyard.

This two-story, $12.8-million facility houses 14 labs and eight classrooms for biology, microbiology, physics, chemistry, organic chemistry, physical science, biology, anatomy and physiology classes. Using the Tilt-Up method of construction, the project was built in a quick 10-month time period, resulting in savings for the owner both in time and money.

The subcontractor was able to reuse casting slabs and work in different phases in order to work with the tight space limitations.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
