Worthy of Rememberance: The design, engineering and construction of the Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial:
On September 28, 2011, the Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial was dedicated at a ceremony in Washington Square Park in Kansas City, Missouri. The project, which started as an effort to demonstrate the benefits of Tilt-Up concrete construction as part of the Tilt-Up Concrete Association's (TCA's) annual convention, quickly turned in to something so much more. Not only is the project a testament to the versatility, applicability and beauty of Tilt-Up construction, it is a demonstration of the generosity, pride and good will of TCA members. Most importantly, it continues the legacy of Korean War Veterans and recognizes those who paid the supreme sacrifice and gave their lives in defense of South Korea.

J.W. Speaker Corporate Headquarters / The Kubala Washatko Architects
The 178,343sf J.W. Speaker Corporate Headquarters in Germantown, Wisconsin houses an innovative program that includes the company’s corporate headquarters on the same premises as the company’s manufacturing facility for OEM lighting solutions. To further increase the speed of construction, Tilt-Up concrete panels were selected as the primary building material. Tilt-Up concrete has long been regarded as a highly desirable structural system for its thermal mass (reducing interior temperature fluctuations), cost efficiency, and creative design flexibility, all of which were vital to the project completion. The material choice also accommodated the various passive sustainable techniques utilized in the building’s environmental performance.

Untapped Potential for Tilt-Up Concrete - Anti-terrorism Applications
In this article, Jeffrey Brown, AIA, and Mark Gardner, PE, explore the connection between the form-making potential of Tilt-Up construction and exciting new opportunities for blast resistance. The article features a three-story office building, designed by Powers Brown Architecture and Hinman Consulting Engineers, which has 3038-m2 (32,705-sf) floor plates totaling 9128 m2(98,250 sf). The facility structurally consists of 9-m (30-ft) wide panels at the perimeter with the curtain wall at the center bay and front corners, a composite steel and concrete floor deck system and a steel joist and metal deck roof. The building was designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification.

Realistic Optimism
The CC100 list is out again and is published in the most recent issue of Concrete Construction. The TCA would like to congratulate those member companies making the list. We would also like to point out the high rankings of these great companies. Included in these numbers is a representation of the percentage Tilt-Up concrete constitutes in annual company revenue. Three companies on this list; Seretta Construction, Builders Plus and Woodland Construction have 100% of their revenue in Tilt-Up construction. Keystone Concrete Placement has the highest revenue of any company reporting Tilt-Up construction; followed by Seretta Construction, Concrete Strategies and Builders Plus.

Engineering Risk in Construction
Risk is one of the most poorly understood engineering concepts—in some cases even by engineers themselves. So when the EF5 tornado tore through Joplin, Mo., on May 22, and flattened not only homes but also several big-box stores with concrete walls, people wonder how such a thing could happen and newspapers write that tilt-up concrete construction is "deadly under certain conditions." But we know when we build, we are taking a risk that the structure will be subjected to "certain conditions"—such as 200-mph winds—we have not designed the building to withstand.

Seated on a grassy plinth to mirror the siting of Gilbert’s building, the addition will be unabashedly modern, clad in dark, polished concrete aggregate tiles (made from Missouri river stone) each measuring 22 feet by 40 feet. Beaux-Arts pavilion it is not. Benjamin acknowledges some are upset about the choice to go contemporary and dark, but he believes once people see the building, they will understand the wisdom of Chipperfield’s vision. “Instead of being made up of smallish panels, this is made up of massive, monumental panels, appropriate to a public building that will be here for a century more—one that will have a relationship to Cass Gilbert in terms of its scale,” Benjamin says.
