Tilt-Up: It's a System

Learn more about all of the facets that go into making Tilt-Up construction more than just concrete wall panels.

While it is possible to construct a shell and clad it with concrete panels, employing Tilt-Up walls in this manner wastes money and time. Tilt-Up Construction is more than just a wall panel.  To truly take advantage of what Tilt-Up has to offer, the building must be designed to incorporate the unique attributes of the construction method as a system.  This includes the foundations, the walls as a bearing element, the roof diaphragm, construction scheduling and sequencing, site parameters, and a host of other integral aspects of the construction process.

Mr. Smith, a partner and director at J.W. Lindsay Enterprises, Ltd., serves as Vice President, Engineering.   Smith began working with Lindsay Construction in 1987 while studying at the University of New Brunswick. After completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, he joined The Lindsay Team full time in 1990.

Following more than thirteen years of designing and constructing pre-engineered metal buildings, Laurence’s focus shifted to the art and formation of Tilt-Up construction.   Since then he has become an essential resource for Lindsay’s offices throughout the Atlantic Provinces.

Laurence is knowledgeable in the structural requirements for steel, concrete, wood and any combination of structural and building materials.   He provides guidance and knowledge to his team and at all stages of the design and construction process.

He has completed many high profile facilities throughout the region and currently maintains a license to practice engineering in all four Atlantic Provinces.  He is a Past President of the Tilt-Up Concrete Association.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
