TCA Conference

The Architecture of Tilt-Up

Explore the breadth of design options employed around the world using the Tilt-Up construction method.

J. Edward Sauter
Tilt-Up Concrete Association
Mount Vernon, IA, USA

Mr. Sauter will present a seminar, which covers the breadth of design options employed around the world using the Tilt-Up method.  The seminar will focus on the creative use of concrete, in particular Tilt-Up in the many different building types and the unique possibilities that architects and builders are developing.

Tilt-Up is still the dominant method used in constructing the “big-box” distribution centers and manufacturing facilities but this presentation will focus on facilities including office buildings, retail facilities, schools, civic structures and the many other building types currently being constructed using the Tilt-Up Method.

The presentation will also cover the different motifs and methods used to achieve many of the looks and innovations.  Included will be curved panels, panel shape, embedded materials, applied materials, thin-brick, and exposed aggregate finishes.

Biography

Mr. Sauter is the Executive Director of the Tilt-Up Concrete Association, a position he has held for the past 20 years.  He is also a registered Architect and NCARB Certified.  In addition to association management and practice as an architect, Sauter was CEO of an insulated concrete sandwich wall company, which pioneered a composite connection system for constructing state-of-the-art insulated sandwich panels using Tilt-Up, Precast, and Cast-in-Place concrete wall systems.
Sauter serves on several ACI committees and is a past chairman of the ACI-551 Committee, Tilt-Up Construction; ACI C-650 Committee, Tilt-Up Superintendent Certification; and ACI 332 Committee, Residential Construction.

Sauter has presented seminars at the World of Concrete on Architectural Finishes and Residential Construction; World of Concrete Latin America; and at many symposia, conferences and events on a wide range of subjects from basics of concrete to architectural treatments of panels and basics of Tilt-Up Construction.  He has authored dozens of articles on Tilt-Up.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
