Tilt-Up: Designing for the Next Superstorm

Overview

Tilt-up concrete buildings have a proven track record of providing extreme storm resistant structures. Can they survive events like Super-Storm Sandy? Engineers are now learning how to effectively use previous event experiences with tilt-up concrete wall performance such as the Home Depot collapse during the 2011 Joplin, Missouri tornado, and the Warren Theater safe haven during the 2013 Moore, Oklahoma tornado. Engineers have discovered the ability to provide economical solutions for heighted safety and resistance.

Tilt-up concrete construction uniquely offers abundant load capacity when used in a creative fashion with other structural materials to provide storm resistant design. Current design practices are based on a “code-minimum approach” that results in a mismatch of material capabilities resulting in a strong-wall, weak-roof building. The presentation shows cost effective examples of structural upgrades owners can use to provide a building that better matches the roof and wall strengths. This approach will provide building owners with a secure and durable, storm resistant building.

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
