The 2012 International Energy Conservation Code: Your Attention Required

Jim Baty, Technical Director, Tilt-Up Concrete Association

The 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) is quickly becoming one of the most talked about subjects in recent years related to the design and construction of new buildings. Those that aren’t discussing it soon will be as it finalizes the most dramatic change in minimum requirements for the building envelope.

While not designed to restrict or eliminate methods of construction or to homogenize the building environment, this new code does establish a parity for envelope construction solutions. While this should be no real surprise, the Federal government's mandated 30% reduction in projected building energy consumption for new structures over 2006 requirements appears to be catching many off guard.

This presentation will address the three primary areas of dramatic change seen in the building envelope performance requirements and address the adoption and implementation strategies across the country.

About the TCA

Founded in 1986, the Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) strives to improve the quality and acceptance of site-cast Tilt-Up construction, a method in which concrete wall panels are cast on-site and tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment. At least 10,000 buildings, enclosing more than 650 million square feet, are constructed each year using this construction method.
